The cantonment of meerut is the 2nd among the largest regions of cantonment in the country, both in terms of population as well as region. The cantonment was set up by English East India Company in 1803. This was the site from which the rebellion of 1857 started. The city limits surround the cantonment from 3 sides from the regions of Pallavpuram to Sainik Vihar to Ganga Nagar.

Soldiers who are posted in the cantonment have given active participation in the battles such as Battle of Ypres, Burma Campaign, 1st and 2nd battle of El Alamein and France, Indo Pak wars, kargil war and the Bangladesh Liberation War. Lots of courage and plenty of honors are in the credit of the officers and battalions of this cantonment.

The cantonment has served as the regimental centre for jat Regiment, Punjab Regiment Corps of Signals, Dogra Regiment, and Sikh Regiment.
